The Zoological Zebra From Zimbabwe
Why am I always last?
My coat is striped, I run quite fast,
I'm handsome, splendid, clever too,
The children like me at the zoo.
But it's not fair,
For everywhere
I'm always last.
I almost missed old Noah's Ark -,
That marvelous zoological barque -,
For ants and bees and cats and dogs,
And elephants and slippery frogs,
Giraffes and hedgehogs, insects too,
Spotted jaguars, kangaroos,
Leopards, mice and nightingales,
Orang-utans, male and female
Of every species on this Earth,
(Two of each, for giving birth)
Were loaded alphabetically.
Where did that leave poor rainsoaked me?
And as I waited in the cold,
The Noah familly filled the hold:
Antarctic penguins, quetzal birds,
Raccoons, and snails, now that's absurd,
For they are ugly, slow and grey,
While I am fast, with costume gay.
The tapeworm hitched a ride somehow,
Inside an unsuspecting cow,
Uakari monkeys, vultures, wrens,
Xerus squirrels, yaks and then,
When all the others were aboard,
And while the mounting waters roared,
And when the Ark was almost full,
With mooing cow and stamping bull,
Then Noah turned his face to me
And said, "Your name begins with zee.
You are the zebra. Bring your wife.
Escape the floods. I'll save your life!"
I didn't need inviting twice,
But leapt abord, and in a trice
My wife and I were safe and sound,
While rain was falling all around.
The waters rose by night and day,
Until our Ark could float away.
And now we are both safe again:
Zimbabwe is dry after the rain.
We're in the 'phone directory',
On the last page, for zed or zee.
Our children learn their ABC,
Before they get to XYZ.
They learn of asp, bat,colobus.
Before they hear all about us!
Their names are last on all school lists,
But now this story has a twist:
I must not always moan and gripe,
For I was saved by merry stripe!
I have a splendid stripy coat,
Which got me onto Noah's boat,
For if I'd been a dull old brown,
Instead of patterned like a clown,
He'd not have seen me in the dark,
And ZEBRA would have missed the Ark!
